I write on behalf of Odin Teatret.

On Sunday 27 June, 7:45 a.m., Torgeir Wethal passed away. I met him as a seventeen year-old boy in 1964 and together we founded Odin Teatret in Oslo, in Norway, together with three other youngsters. Torgeir was waiting for his eighteenth birthday to seek admission to the theatre school, but he didn’t hesitate to believe in and be loyal to our group which, when started, seemed a momentary amateurish enterprise.

In 46 years of activity, Torgeir became an actor, a theatre and a film director, always with our group. His film with Ryszard Cieslak on training is a unique testimony about the innovative strength of this practice which had been rediscovered by Jerzy Grotowski. Torgeir’s films on the training, the performances, the journeys and the barters of the Odin show the salient stages of a group that delineated new fields for the action of the theatre. He participated in all the performances of the Odin, often as assistant director. Until May 2010, despite being already weakened by his illness, he rehearsed our new production, The Chronic Life.

In November 2009 he was diagnosed with a malignant lung tumor that quickly spread. We want to give this news to you who didn’t know him. For you who knew him, it is a fragment of your life that bids you farewell.

Ti scrivo a nome di tutto l’Odin Teatret.

Domenica 27 giugno alle 7,45 di mattina è morto Torgeir Wethal. L’avevo incontrato appena diciassettenne nel 1964 e insieme avevamo fondato a Oslo, in Norvegia, l’Odin Teatret. Era in attesa di compiere diciott’anni per presentarsi alla scuola teatrale, ma non esitò a credere e rimanere leale al gruppo che all’inizio sembrava un’impresa amatoriale passeggera.

In questi 46 anni di attività, Torgeir divenne attore, regista teatrale e cinematografico, sempre nel nostro gruppo. Il suo film con Ryszard Cieslak sul training è una testimonianza unica sulla forza innovativa di questa pratica riscoperta da Grotowski. I suoi film sul training, gli spettacoli, i viaggi e i baratti dell’Odin riportano alla vita tappe salienti di un gruppo che ha delineato nuovi campi dell’agire teatrale. Aveva partecipato a tutti gli spettacoli dell’Odin, anche come aiuto regista. Fino al maggio 2010, nonostante fosse già debilitato dalla malattia, ha lavorato alle prove del nuovo spettacolo dell’Odin, La vita cronica.

El domingo 27 de junio a las 7.45 de la mañana falleció Torgeir Wethal. Lo conocí cuando tenía apenas 17 años en 1964 y juntos fundamos en Oslo, en Noruega, el Odin Teatret. Estaba por cumplir dieciocho años para poder ingresar en la escuela teatral, pero no dudó de creer y permanecer leal al grupo que al comienzo parecía un proyecto diletante pasajero.

Durante estos 46 años de actividad Torgeir se vuelve actor, director teatral y cinematográfico, siempre en nuestro grupo. Su film con Ryszard Cieslak sobre el training es un testimonio único de la fuerza de innovación de esta práctica redescubierta por Grotowski. Su film sobre el training, los espectáculos, los viajes y trueques del Odin muestran los puntos sobresalientes de un grupo que ha delineado nuevos campos de acción teatral. Ha participado en todos los espectáculos del Odin, incluso como asistente de dirección. Hasta mayo del 2010, a pesar de estar debilitado por la enfermedad, ha trabajado en los ensayos del nuevo espectáculo del Odin, La vida crónica.

Kære ven,

Jeg skriver til dig på vegne af Odin Teatret.

Søndag den 27. juni kl. 7.45 døde Torgeir Wethal. Jeg traf Torgeir i 1964, da han kun var 17 år gammel, og sammen grundlagde vi, og tre andre, unge mennesker, Odin Teatret i Oslo i Norge. Torgeir ventede på sin 18 års fødselsdag for at kunne søge om optagelse på teaterskolen, men han tøvede ikke med at tro på og være loyal mod vores gruppe, som, da den startede, forekom at være et midlertidigt amatørforetagende.

I løbet af disse 46 års virksomhed blev Torgeir skuespiller og teater- og filminstruktør, hele tiden inden for vores gruppe. Hans film om træning med Ryszard Cieslak er et unikt vidnesbyrd om denne praksis’ banebrydende styrke, som Jerzy Grotowski havde genopdaget. Torgeirs film om Odins træning, forestillinger, rejser og byttehandler viser de vigtigste udviklingstrin i en gruppe, som har afstukket nye områder for teatervirksomhed. Han deltog i alle Odins forestillinger, ofte som assistentinstruktør. Selvom han allerede var mærket af sin sygdom, deltog han i prøverne på vores ny forestilling, Det kroniske liv, indtil maj 2010.

I november 2009 fik han konstateret en ondartet lungekræft, som hurtigt spredte sig. Vi ønsker at give denne information til dig, som ikke kendte ham. For dig, som kendte ham, er det et fragment af dit liv, som tager afsked med dig.
